Immediate Response and Cleanup
When water damage occurs, immediate action is crucial to minimize damage and prevent mold growth. The following steps should be taken promptly:
* Stop the source of water. If possible, turn off the main water supply or contact a plumber to shut off the affected area.
* Remove standing water. Use a wet/dry vacuum, mop, or towels to remove as much water as possible. Avoid using a regular vacuum cleaner, as this can damage the machine and create a fire hazard.
* Ventilate the area. Open windows and doors to allow air to circulate and dry out the area. Use fans to assist with ventilation.
What to Spray After Water Damage
After standing water has been removed, it is important to prevent mold growth by treating the area with an EPA-approved antimicrobial solution. Some commonly used solutions include:
* Bleach solution. Mix 1 part bleach with 10 parts water and apply to affected surfaces. Rinse thoroughly with water after application.
* Hydrogen peroxide. Apply a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to affected surfaces and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with water and dry thoroughly.
* Commercial antimicrobial solutions. These solutions are specifically formulated to kill mold and mildew and can be applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
